Course overview
Vaccinology: Science and Public Health is a 5-day short course held during September 23-27, 2024 in Nagasaki, Japan. It is run jointly by the School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health, Nagasaki University and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, in collaboration with the Nagasaki University Vaccine Research and Development Center (VRDC) – DEJIMA Infectious Disease Research Alliance and the Nagasaki University Global Health, World-leading Innovative & Smart Education programme (WISE).
It includes an one day symposium followed by four days of didactic and interactive sessions.

In this course, only a letter of participation will be issued.

Course aim
The course aims to address both scientific and public health aspects of vaccines and immunisation.
Content
- History of vaccines
- Immunology and correlates of protection
- Vaccine types, modalities, and target product profiles
- Vaccine development, artificial intelligence, and manufacturing
- Epidemiology, surveillance, and disease burden estimation
- Clinical trial designs and vaccine evaluation
- Vaccine licensure, regulatory approval, and safety
- Modelling and economic evaluation of vaccines
- Vaccine delivery and policy
- Social mobilisation and communication strategies
- Vaccination behavior and hesitancy
- Vaccines and antimicrobial resistance
- Vaccines against outbreak pathogens and pandemic preparedness
Eligibility
The course is designed for vaccine researchers and public health professionals who are involved in and/or interested in research, development, epidemiology, policy making, and implementation related to vaccines and immunisation.
We encourage applications from Japan and all over the world. As the course is taught in English, students should have good English language ability, but it does not have to be perfect.

Travel and accommodation
The course is run in Nagasaki which is a historic city and the capital city of Nagasaki Prefecture located in Kyushu island in Japan. Students need to manage travel and accommodation by themselves. For international students, further information on accommodation options can be provided.
Visa
Students are responsible for obtaining any visa or other permissions to attend the course and are encouraged to start the application process as early as possible. The course administration can provide supporting documentation if requested.
