Nagasaki University and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) held a signing ceremony to commemorate the launch of a new NU-LSHTM Joint PhD degree programme in Global Health at LSHTM in London

On December 11, 2017, Nagasaki University and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) held a signing ceremony to commemorate the launch of a new NU-LSHTM Joint PhD degree programme in Global Health at LSHTM in London.

Nagasaki University and LSHTM exchanged the Memorandum of Understanding in 2013, and since then, both universities have actively been continuing partnership by conducting collaborative research and exchanging researchers. In 2014, two world-class professors were seconded to Nagasaki University and in 2015, School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health (TMGH) was established in collaboration with LSHTM. To consolidate international collaboration and to develop research students who are competent independent researchers in global health, TMGH and LSHTM have established the new Joint PhD degree programme in Global Health to start in October 2018.

To commemorate the launch of this Joint PhD degree programme, a delegation from Nagasaki University including President Kohno, Prof. Shimokawa (Trustee, Research ), Prof. Shirabe (Vice- President, BSL-4 facility project), Prof.Kita (Dean of TMGH), Prof.Hirayama (Dean of Nekken) attended the signing ceremony from NU, and Director of LSHTM, Prof. Peter Piot, Prof. Brain Greenwood, Prof. John Edmunds attended the signing ceremony from LSHTM side. At the signing ceremony, President Kohno and Prof. Piot signed the Memorandum of Agreement for the Joint PhD degree programme, which enabled the establishment of this programme. Also, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Mr. Koji Tsuruoka from Embassy of Japan in the UK and Prof.Nobuo Ueno, Director of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) attended the signing ceremony to celebrate this important event for academic exchange between Japan and UK.

In order to mark this occasion, LSHTM held a research symposium after the signing ceremony. Opening speeches were made by Prof. Piot and Mr.Tsuruoka followed by key speakers from both NU and LSHTM. From NU, Prof. Shirabe (National Research Center for the Control and Prevention of Infectious Diseases), Prof. Takamura (Atomic Bomb Disease Institute) and Prof. Kawakami (Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences) gave presentations during the symposium and explored opportunities for further collaboration. The symposium was followed by a reception party, which invited nearly 100 people including many LSHTM staff and the reception became a good platform to exchange ideas between researchers.

We hope that through establishing the Joint PhD degree programme, we strengthen relationship with LSHTM and contribute for the improvement of academic exchange between Japan and UK.
