Course overview
The Nagasaki Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H) is a three month, full time taught course in Nagasaki and the Philippines. The course is taught by lecturers from Japan, UK,  and other countries who have clinical as well as research experience in tropical diseases. This course is intensive and designed to equip medical doctors with knowledge and skills necessary to work effectively in resource limited regions, especially useful to the doctors who are planning to go to work in international health missions and those who would like to work travel clinics.

Aims & objectives
The aim of this course is to educate and train medical doctors to practice medicine and promote public health in resource limited regions. It also aims to spark research interest in global health and encourage students to go for higher degrees such as Masters and PhDs in related fields.

The course covers not only common infectious diseases that are prevalent in resource limited regions including tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV, but also neglected tropical and non-communicable diseases. The course contains eight academic modules linked with the Master of Tropical Medicine (MTM) course that are taught and assessed in Nagasaki in first 10 weeks of the course, followed by 2 weeks of clinical and public health teaching in San Lazaro Hospital, Manila (1 week) and Leyte (1 week). Lectures, laboratory practicals, and students group works on tropical medicine from various aspects that include microbiological, clinical, and socio-economical / public health aspects are the main modes of education in Nagasaki, whereas in Manila and Leyte, bedside teaching in hospitals, and observation, discussion and epidemiological investigation of diseases in the communities are the main focus.

The course is approved by American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH), which means you can sit for the CTropMed exam (https://www.astmh.org/education-resources/certificate-programs) which is an international exam for clinical tropical medicine and traveller’s health.

Student Testimonials

“Finally, I got a Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (DTM&H) in Nagasaki! DTM&H started from 1899 in London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), then this was a first-trial DTM&H in Nagasaki. There were great lectures from LSHTM professors and wonderful lab practices. We went to the Philippines for 2 weeks for field works. I saw Rabies, Dengue, Tuberculosis, Measles cases, etc. They have become precious experiences to me. THANK YOU!”
